Improvers

PVQHA IMPROVER GUIDELINES

Note: These rules are for use in our club Shows, other clubs’ rules may differ slightly.

  • The PVQHA Improver Program is designed to help introduce newcomers into the Western Industry.
  • Improver status is based on the riders’ ability regardless of the horse.
  • An Improver is a person of any age that has not won more than 3 first place ribbons in that event.
  • Improvers may compete in a chosen event for as long as it takes to win 3 first places.
  • Improvers may compete in these classes for the whole show season provided they are NOT showing competitively in Performance events at AA shows or State/National level.
  • Improvers cannot compete on stallions.
  • Horses DO NOT have to be registered with any association.
  • Improvers can ride a horse of any age in either a shank bit or a snaffle bit. Although it is preferable to ride one-handed in a bridle, Improvers will not be penalised for riding two handed in a shank bit provided they ride this way throughout the whole class.
  • Improvers may compete in any dress code but shirts must be button up front and long sleeved; either straw, felt or hard hat may be used. Boots can be elastic sided and must have a heel.
  • Improvers will not the discriminated against by their dress code.
  • Improvers may compete in Open and Amateur events, however, if an Improver wins an Open or Amateur event, no matter how many other entries are in the class, this win will eliminate the rider from Improver status for that particular event.
  • Improvers must have an Amateur Card if they wish to compete in Amateur classes.
  • Improvers may use a Western, English or stock saddle in Improver events, all other
  • Western classes must wear the correct Western Attire and use a Western saddle and bridle, Hunter classes an English saddle and bridle and correct English Attire.
  • Improvers are encouraged to approach club members if they are unsure of any rulings or need help or advice on anything. If this member can’t help you, they will certainly point you in the direction of someone who can.
  • To be eligible for the End of Year High Point Improver Award you MUST be a financial member of PVQHA and your horse(s) must be nominated on your membership form and you need to attend at least 3 Improver Shows for the season and compete in at least 3 different Performance events. Improvers can change horses throughout the season, but must nominate the new horse to remain eligible for End of Year awards.
  • If you win an overall End of Year High Point Improver Award, you will be asked to move up into Intermediate, Amateur, Youth or Open classes.

The next A Class show will be held on 29 April 2012 at Werribee Park. Judge will be Kellie Timms and Di Fender judging the trail. Program and entry form are now on the forms page. Note that the program has been updated to include intermediate, 2yo and jackpot classes for the open HUS, pleasure and trail events
